Ilhan Omar and Her Controversial Remarks

A representative has been coming under fire from both republicans and democrats for their hateful speech. Ilhan Omar, the 5th representative of Minnesota, the first Somali American and the first naturalized citizen of African birth in the United States Congress, and the first woman of color to represent Minnesota. 

Recently, Omar has come under fire for her anti-semitic tweets, especially about Israel and the Jewish people. Despite this, democrats have rallied behind her as house minority leader Hakeem Jeffries said Rep. Omar certainly had made mistakes, “Ilhan Omar has apologized. She has indicated that she’ll learn from her mistake, and is working to build bridges with the Jewish community.

On the 2nd, House Republicans voted to remove Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee, citing past controversial comments she made about Israel and concerns over her objectivity. The vote was 218-211 along party lines.
