A New Check on Trump’s Power
On Tuesday, November 6 millions of Americans voted in the midterm elections. Every seat in the House of Representatives and a third of the Senate was up for election, along with state and local positions. As expected, Democrats successfully gained a majority in the House of Representatives, while Republicans retained their majority in the Senate.
Democrats gaining control of the House is very significant. For the past two years, Republicans have had control of the presidency and both houses of Congress. This allowed them to pass legislation without having to make any compromises and the Trump administration to do as they please without any oversight. The Democrats in the House will now be able to act as a check on President Trump’s power.
Everything from President Trump’s financial history to how the administration plans to deal with Russian interference in elections will be investigated. This is because the majority party has the ability to issue subpoenas. Not only will they be able to provide oversight for the Trump administration, but now the Senate Republicans will have to consult democrats pm any piece of legislation they hope to pass. The Democratic victory in the House of Representatives was necessary to place a check on the power of the Trump Administration.
