Although almost all Hills West students are involved community service programs, it is not often that they are recognized by the media. However, senior Evan Kindler sparked the interest of FiOS1 News with his involvement in a national movement called the Friendship Circle, which focuses on forming bonds between teenagers and children with special needs. His interview on the segment entitled “Heroes on the Island” showcases his special friendship with fellow student Jake Willinger.

Evan got his start in the program during his freshman year, when his mother explained to him the power that friendship can have in another person’s life. He started visiting Jake a few times a week to play basketball and Xbox, but eventually this casual friendship turned into a life-changing experience. As Evan says in the interview, “I just love doing it; it’s not like community service for me. It’s just hanging out with a friend.”

In a second interview with the Roundup, Evan went on to explain how the experience has benefited him just as much as it has Jake: “it has taught me the value of friendship and the importance of acceptance, regardless of someone having disabilities or not.” Furthermore, When asked about his most rewarding moment in the program, he simply stated, “The best experience I’ve had working with Jake is seeing him be accepted by others and included in their activities.”

Now in his final year at Hills West, it is almost time for Evan to leave the Friendship Circle and move on to college. But, it is clear that this is neither the end of his friendship with Jake, nor the end of his outreach into the community. He finished the interview by sharing some advice to others looking to reach out in the community. His experience has taught him that “the best way to become involved is through the acceptance, patience, understanding and respect of everyone.”
