The 2024 Oscar nominations were led by Oppenheimer with 13 nominations and Poor Things with 11.  After a year dominated by Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece and Barbie, the awards show is especially exciting.

Surprisingly, Greta Gerwig missed out on a best director nomination for Barbie, though she and Noah Baumbach were recognized for the film’s adapted screenplay. Margot Robbie, who starred in and produced Barbie, was also notably absent from the acting nominations. Ryan Gosling, nominated for his role in Barbie, openly expressed his disappointment over these snubs. Similarly, Leonardo DiCaprio, despite his role in Killers of the Flower Moon, didn’t secure an acting nomination this year.

Lily Gladstone from Killers of the Flower Moon became the first Native American to be nominated for best actress. America Ferrera also earned a nod for best supporting actress for her role in Barbie, while Justine Triet entered the history books as the eighth woman nominated for best director with Anatomy of a Fall.

The best actor category is going to be a tight contest this year. Paul Giamatti is in the running for his role in The Holdovers. Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer has also earned him a nomination. Bradley Cooper is recognized for his depiction of composer Leonard Bernstein in Maestro. Colman Domingo is in contention for his portrayal of Civil Rights leader Bayard Rustin in Rustin, and Jeffrey Wright rounds out the category with his performance in American Fiction.

With a mix of expected frontrunners and surprising omissions, this year’s Oscar nominations have set the stage for an awards ceremony that promises to be both exciting and unpredictable.
