This past Sunday, the Hills West boys basketball team suffered their first loss of the season to district rival Hills East at Adelphi University in Garden City. The Colts were able to build a comfortable 33-20 first half off of a hot shooting start, and eventually finished off the half with a 36-28 lead. The Thunderbirds of Hills East came out of halftime with two unanswered field goals and eventually narrowed down the Colts’ lead to six. Hills East then went on a 10-0 run to finally take the lead, and they never looked back. This was not a bad loss for the Colts, Hills East is currently ranked the #2 team on Long Island by News 12 Varsity (West is ranked #6) and it also did not affect Hills West’s league record because this was a non-league loss. Bright spots during the loss included a 20-point performance from Matthew Asenjo and an 18-point showing from Derek Brower Jr.

Hills West was able to bounce back on Tuesday evening at Bellport when they battled with the Clippers. The Colts escaped with a 60-54 victory and improved to an unblemished record of 3-0 in the conference and an outstanding overall record of 9-1. A balanced scoring attack, featuring four players scoring nine points or more, led the Colts to their ninth win on the season. Jovahn Williamson recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds while Derek Brower Jr. stuffed the stat sheet with 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists. The Colts’ next game will be on Thursday afternoon at home against East Islip.
