Coaches Corner: Colts advance to the Suffolk County Championship
The Hills West Colts battle the West Islip Lions this Saturday afternoon at 12pm at Stony Brook University in the Suffolk County Championship game. Last Saturday the Colts offense was dominant against the North Babylon defense in a 55-34 pounding. This week I asked Coach if the fact that West Islip is undefeated this season gives the team any extra motivation to hand them their first loss and he said “No not really. We don’t really pay attention to the other teams record too much. It was 16-13 when we lost to them in overtime. We didn’t have our full group of guys for the game so it should be exciting Saturday”. I asked coach Madden what impressed him about West Islip and he said “Their quarterback is a really good player (Jake Guercio), number 52 is also a good player, Tim Mullane. He plays really hard on both sides of the ball. They are just a good team overall”. West Islip’s quarterback, Jake Guercio is 17/26 for 285 yards and 5 touchdown passes on the season. He has also carried the ball for 572 yards on 59 attempts. Coach Madden talked about Jake Guercio’s ability to run the ball and his gameplan for stopping West Islip. “We have to contain their quarterback and tackle much better on defense and get off the field. Offensively we need to get our playmakers the ball and allow them to do their thing”. The school has been buzzing with excitement throughout this playoff run and many people believe this team can win it all. I asked Coach how he felt about his team and how far he thought they could go and he said “I think our team is as good as anybody out there so as long as we play together and root for one another and rise up on each play I think we’ll be fine”. The stands have been packed all season with Colts supporters in their red and gold, and this week should be the same. Come support our Colts at Stony Brook University at 12pm and don’t forget to bring $6 and your student ID or you will not be about to attend. Have fun and GO COLTS!!!!
