Hills West Varsity Football Falls Short Against Smithtown East
Entering Saturday’s contest, both Hills West and Smithtown East had identical records of 1 win and 2 losses on the season. In Hills West’s last game, they lost 30-28 against Bay Shore, and in Smithtown East’s last game they lost 33-27 against West Islip.
Smithtown East put up the first points of the game with a field goal by kicker Kevin Schroeder. West would take a 7-3 lead when quarterback Anthony Lucarelli connected with wide receiver Jake Klose on a 18 yard touchdown pass, and kicker Arthur Bosua converted on the extra point. Smithtown East was not done scoring in the first quarter, as a touchdown pass from quarterback John Daniggelis to wide receiver Tom Skoff gave them back the lead. Schroeder added the extra point and Smithtown East had a 10-7 lead going into the 2nd quarter.
Both teams were held scoreless in the 2nd quarter, with the score still 10-7 heading into the 3rd quarter. Smithtown East extended their lead in the game to 17-7 with a touchdown pass from Daniggelis to wide receiver Lucis Hoffmann, and Kevin Schroeder’s extra point. This would be all the scoring in the 3rd quarter.
Smithtown East got on the board again in the 4th quarter with a field goal by kicker Kevin Schroeder that gave them a 20-7 lead. Anthony Lucarelli and Jake Klose converted on their 2nd touchdown of the game, this closed the deficit to 20-13. On Hills West’s final drive of the game Anthony Lucarelli had a pass picked off by John Daniggelis and this would put an end to West’s comeback attempt. The final score of the game was Smithtown East 20 and Hills West 13. Hills West fell to 1-3 on the season but they fought hard and look to come back strong in their next game.
