Coaches Corner: Colts advance to the Long Island Championship
This Sunday the Hills West Colts battle the Garden City Trojans for the Division ll Long Island Championship at Stony Brook University at 12pm. Last week the Colts annihilated West Islip in the Suffolk County Championship game 38-20. As soon as West kicked the ball off they had the momentum and confidence after a muffed return by West Islip which set the Colts up inside the red zone. This week the Colts will look to continue their great play against Garden City. I caught up with Coach Madden for my weekly spot, Coaches Corner, and here’s how it went:
1.) In your scouting of undefeated Garden city what stands out to you about them?
- “They’re very disciplined and very fast. They run their offense very efficiently and they run to the ball real well on defense”.
2.) How do you keep your players grounded and focused coming off such a huge win last week?
- “I encourage them to celebrate and enjoy the moment over the weekend and then when we come back we will really start to focus on Garden City “.
3.) How do you plan on stopping Garden City’s powerful running attack?
- “I think our guys have to step it up. Our defensive line has to be really stout, our linebackers have to run, and our secondary has to force with reckless abandon. So really that’s the formula”.
4.) Has the team been encouraged or inspired by the tremendous fan support throughout the playoff run?
- “Yeah definitely, they really appreciate it. The school has come out and supported it and it’s a good way to end Thanksgiving weekend on Sunday”.
The Colts have played well on both sides of the ball throughout this playoff run and will look for leadership from their coaches and star players. Come and support your Colts at Stony Brook University this Sunday and don’t forget to bring your student ID and $6 or you will not be able to attend the game. Come cheer on your Colts as they look for their first Long Island championship win since 2009.
